So, the mic I bought allegedly supports power, but when I switched the GoPro to “external powered mic” I got tons of video with no sound. When I use it on standard input, I get sound but maybe not as good as it could be.
I’ll continue trying different things. Meanwhile, check out some test footage if you want. External mic, standard setting.

Lol. I know. I wanted the mic to be at the back and this was just testing so I stuck it to a rear quarter window

How are you powering the mic?

What kind of Mic is it? The little 3.5mm Jack’s are not all the same. The TRS/TRRS standards are a mess. I found that I had to buy a few different adapters to find the right one.
Also, I suspect the GoPro isn't putting power on to the mic. In power mode, it might be switching to line level input instead of Mic level. In which case, you won't hear anything because the amount of signal it gets is way too low.

It’s a sony clip on stereo mic (see below). The adapter is the official gopro adapter. I’ll look at the settings again

via the camera and the gopro adapter. You change the settings in the “external mic” category to “powered mic” as far as I know.

I’m using the exact same microphone with my GoPro (the mic is clipped to the trunk lid just above the license plate here):

What setting do you set the camera to?
also, do you use a windsock?

I would interpret “powered mic” to mean one that has an external power supply, not that the GoPro is supplying power to it.

My camera didn’t have a charge for me to confirm, but it’s either set to “Standard” or “Standard+”. Definitely not powered mic.
You don’t need a windsock if the microphone isn’t in the wind. I set mine lik e so:
At first I clipped it the other way around, with the actual microphone on the outside of the trunk lid, but that was in the airstream and picked up a bunch of noise:

Nice! I tuck mine under the bumper, so it does get wind. I’ll likely move it for further use
